Got this email, and it is a great way to get involved in a great cause and help people in need in our area. I encourage you to check it out!

Friend of refugees,
I would like to invite you to join us for World Refugee Day (Sunday June 12, 2011 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM). This celebration is being held in honor of the refugees that have so bravely come to America. The day will be filled with cultural performances, ethnic food and activities for kids. We will have educational tables to learn more about the cultures we serve. New Roots for Refugees will be present and selling their vegetables. Please help us spread the word and invite your friends to join in this wonderful event. Please contact me if you have any questions.

A message from the devil

How real is your faith? How well do you know God’s love? Is it real, or is it all just cliche and empty words? Watch this video, and think about it. It really is time that our actions matched up with what we say we believe, or we might as well just walk away and stop pretending.

World Vision

My children’s Ministry sponsors a little boy named Sat in India. My wife and I sponsor another girl, also from India. What we do may not seem to be missions work, but it is. World Vision is making a difference every day in communities by teaching farmers how to irrigate crops, providing vaccinations to children, giving solar powered lamps to students to do their studies at night, providing livestock to families to start businesses by selling eggs or milk, and sharing about our wonderful Savior.
I doubt that I’ll ever meet Sat or Kamini, the girl my wife and I sponsor, in person. But I enjoy watching them grow in their letters and progress reports, hearing about the things that they learn, and knowing that we are making a difference in two communities that would otherwise be left hopelessly impoverished.
Is God calling you to make a difference but you don’t know how or don’t feel equipped…?
If any of you are interested in making a difference in a community overseas, I have several children from World Vision in my office (info packets, not actual kids) who are in need of sponsorship. Even in our rough economy, we largely enjoy the things that we want to enjoy. These children and their families live on less that what you would spend going to our coke machine each day. Sponsorship provide them with education, health care, and supplies. It also provides training for the family and the community in agriculture, clean running water, and other needs while also sharing about the love of Jesus.
The cost is $35 a month. You have a chance to interact with your child by writing them and getting responses and progress reports, and you make a difference in an entire community.
If you would be interested in such ministry, please let me know. If you do decide to sponsor a child you can also get a $20 gift certificate from Family Christian Stores, who partner with World Vision, as a thank you.
I know most of us (none of us?) are swimming in extra cash, but I would ask you to consider and ask the Lord about being involved in this different kind of missions work.

Thanks,
DK

Slow it down

I pick up a lot of great tips from Epic Parenting (epicparent.tv) but this one really got my attention, because its something that I see so many families struggle with…there are so many things to do and be involved in.
So, I share this post with you in hopes that it blesses you and gives you permission to cuts some stuff out and just be a family again!
Enjoy!

My kids are constantly looking for something to do or looking for dad to be the Team Sprad Recreation Director.

  • “Dad, will you take me fishing”
  • “Dad, let’s go rock climbing”
  • “Dad, can we go out to eat”
  • “Dad, lets go snowboarding”
  • “Dad, can we go to Six Flags”
  • “Dad, let’s go get ice cream”
  • “Dad, let’s ride dirt bikes”
  • “Dad, can we watch a movie on Netflix or Redbox”
  • “Dad, can we go to the pool”

I am learning that I have taught my kids that life should always be about  rollercoasters, last second shots, big air, quadruple brownie hot fudge sundays with extra cherries and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
The reality of life is that much of it is mundane, routine and even kind of boring.  I am working to reverse this curse by boring my kids.  Here is a few things I am trying to reverse the curse of high expectations in my kids…

  • Eat at home more often
  • Play more board games and legos
  • Turn off the tv and spend time together doing nothing (wow…novel idea)
  • Playing catch in the front yard
  • Family bike ride around the neighborhood
  • Spend a Fam Night at home
  • Have a “stay-cation”, take a week off and hang around the house
  • Create space for “creativity”…have your kids invent a product, business, write a book or____________________(fill in the blank)
  • Spend time in God’s Word (give them stuff to read each night before they go to bed)
  • Give them the family video cam, video editing software and let them create
  • Re-arrange their room they way they want to

In my role as dad I have taught my kids that every moment in life should be chalked full of dirtbikes, going, fishing, cheer, staying busy, eating out, playing sports, skating, rock climbing, movies, swimming, hiking and biking just to name a few.
However, i am realizing that our role as parents is to train our kids that life is not always “a box of chocolates” or one big fun “roller coaster ride”.  I believe that when we intentionally bore our kids, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship will thrive!
What is 1 thing that you need to STOP doing & START doing to teach your kids contentedness in life?
